Project Yuri Puts Western Australia on the Map

Melbourne, Australia: The Australian Hydrogen Council welcomes the announcement of ENGIE reaching Financial Investment Decision (FID) on its project with Yara in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Please attribute the following comments to Dr Fiona Simon, CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council.

“I am delighted to see AHC members ENGIE and Yara reach this pivotal milestone in the development of one of the world’s first industrial-scale renewable hydrogen projects and the largest electrolyser project in
Australia to reach FID.

“Production of ammonia is by far the largest user of gas in the whole chemicals sector which means there is an opportunity to decarbonise this industry.

“Expanding the hydrogen industry in the production of ammonia for fertiliser is a crucial step forward and will pave the way for other industries that use high-temperature heating at a relatively smaller scale, such as food and meat processing.

“As one of the first facilities in the world to use green hydrogen to produce clean ammonia, the Yuri project is of particular importance for reducing emissions in Australia.

“ENGIE and Yara are putting Western Australia on the map as a hydrogen powerhouse, and we look forward to seeing the project complete, supporting local jobs and a thriving export industry.”
