Australian Government’s Future Made in Australia Act critical for Australian hydrogen industry to compete on a global scale

Melbourne, Australia: The Australian Hydrogen Council congratulates the Australian Government on announcing plans to create a Future Made in Australia Act this year.

In Adelaide today with senior business delegates from Australia and Japan for the Australia Japan Business Cooperation Committee’s Transitioning Australia-Japan Energy Partnership – towards a Carbon-Neutral 2050, the AHC said the Act has been widely supported and considered vital for Australia’s hydrogen industry to remain competitive on an international scale and to facilitate new decarbonisation partnerships.

The 200 industry executives heard why the next phase of the prosperous bilateral relationship is underpinned by both countries partnering to deliver on industry and government decarbonisation agendas. The role of government direction and policies, like this Act is fundamental to achieving this.

CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council Dr Fiona Simon said:

“The Australian Hydrogen Council welcomes the Australian Government’s announcement to develop the Future Made in Australia Act, aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing and catalysing investment in expanding technologies.

“This is important recognition of the need to secure a long-term solution that supports Australia’s sustainable economy, while ensuring a competitive advantage for these industries on a global stage.

“We will be looking toward the Federal Budget next month for significant funding support for industry to match the strong ambition set by the Australian Government.

“We have long advocated that Australian industries need more support to accelerate the transition to net zero, and recognise the importance of forging international relationships to ensure Australia’s hydrogen industry is supported by offshore partners like Japan.

“The hydrogen industry is calling for critical support and recognition of current domestic use, storage, and transportation to further advance the industry here based on known success stories across Australia.

“The sentiment from Australian and Japanese executives in Adelaide today was very positive and ambitious as the signals from Government facilitate new decarbonisation partnerships between our countries.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the Australian Government as it progresses development of this Act, and helping new and emerging sectors to thrive across regional Australia.”
