Major milestone for $2bn Hydrogen Headstart program as EOIs open

Melbourne, Australia: The Australian Hydrogen Council welcomes the launch of the EOI process for the $2 billion Hydrogen Headstart program today by the Australian Rewewable Energy Agency (ARENA), a significant policy critical to the future of the Australian hydrogen industry.

Please attribute the following statement to Dr Fiona Simon, CEO of the Australian Hydrogen Council:

“We are very pleased that the Federal Government has acted quickly following industry consultation on the design of the $2 billion Hydrogen Headstart program and expedited the EOI process.

“AHC called for the Federal Government to act quickly to ensure hydrogen projects in Australia have certainty in the face of fierce global market competition, and we are pleased they have recognised the urgency.

“We’re at a critical stage where we need to get large hydrogen projects off the ground so we can scale up to gigawatt capacity. Hydrogen Headstart can make a significant difference by providing production credits for projects that will produce renewable hydrogen or derivates at scale.

“AHC is committed to working with the Federal Government as it refreshes the National Hydrogen Strategy, and continues its response to the US Inflation Reduction Act.

“This is the swift action we need to remain competitive across the global hydrogen industry and we hope for further investment in Hydogen Headstart to support the large pipeline of hydrogen projects underway in Australia.”

Expressions of Interest are now open, and will close 10 November 2023.
